WAEC Syllabus for Igbo

The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has released the official syllabus for all subjects for the 2026 examination, and Igbo is one of them. The WAEC Syllabus for Igbo helps guide candidates on the areas they are expected to study, so they can prepare effectively for the exam.

Studying with the syllabus gives you direction and helps you avoid reading unnecessary topics. It is best used together with recommended textbooks and past questions to improve your understanding and performance. Below is the complete WAEC Igbo syllabus for 2026.

WAEC Igbo Syllabus

Section A: Essay

Part I: Composition / Letter Writing

Candidates are advised not to spend more than 45 minutes on this section. Five questions will be set, and candidates are expected to answer only one in about 300 words.

Essay types include:

  • Narrative
  • Descriptive
  • Argumentative
  • Expository
  • Dialogue
  • Debate
  • Letter writing

Part II: Sound System

Candidates will answer one out of two questions.

Areas of focus include:

  • Igbo phonemes: vowels, consonants, and syllabic nasal
  • Production and classification of sounds
  • Syllable structure
  • Sound processes:
    • Vowel harmony
    • Vowel assimilation
    • Vowel elision
    • Consonant elision
  • Tone and tone notation
  • Igbo alphabet

Part III: Grammar

Candidates will answer one out of two questions.

Topics include:

  • Spelling rules
  • Word formation
  • Igbo dialects and Standard Igbo
  • Loan words
  • Igbo metalanguage (new words)
  • Word classes: noun, verb, pronoun, conjunction, preposition, etc.
  • Grammatical categories: tense, number, person
  • Phrases and clauses: types and functions
  • Sentences: structure and types
  • Direct and indirect speech
  • Lexis and structure
  • Punctuation marks

Section B: Literature

Part I: Oral Literature

Three questions will be set, and candidates will answer one.

Topics include:

  • Definition and characteristics of oral literature
  • Classification and functions
  • Literary devices
  • Folktales (Ifo)
  • Anecdotes (Ụkabụilu)
  • Legends (Nkọkịrịkọ / Akụkọ dike)
  • Myths (Nkọmịrịkọ / Akụkọ okike)
  • Poems (Abụ)
  • Songs (Uri)
  • Proverbs (Ilu)
  • Riddles (Agwụgwa)
  • Chants (Mbem)
  • Oral drama (Ejije ọnụ)
  • Tongue twisters (Okwuntụhi)

Part II: Written Literature

Three questions will be set, and candidates will answer one. All questions will be based on prescribed texts.

Section C: Culture (Omenala)

Topics include:

  • Customs (Omenala)
  • Igbo identity: language, dressing, religion, traditions
  • Greetings in different situations
  • Ceremonies and activities
  • Hospitality (Nnabata ọbịa)

Life and Beliefs

  • Birth and naming practices
  • Beliefs: reincarnation, ogbanje, dreams, etc.

Festivals and Activities

  • Ọfala, New Yam Festival, marriage rites, burial rites, etc.
  • Traditional games and entertainment

Institutions (Ewumewu)

  • Political institutions: family, traditional rulers, age grades
  • Social institutions: marriage, family system
  • Titles and chieftaincy

Religious Practices

  • Divination and sacrifices
  • Religious objects: ọfọ, ikenga, ogu, etc.
  • Deities and spirits

Economic Activities

  • Trade, farming, crafts
